On Saturday, August 9, 2025, the heart of Downers Grove will once again beat strongly with love, hope, and community as Ben’s Memorial Mile returns to Fishel Park and the streets of Downers Grove. This vibrant, family-friendly festival and race honors the life and legacy of Ben Silver, Downers Grove North High School graduate, accomplished track and cross-country athlete, and gifted singer, songwriter, and poet.
Ben’s life was filled with light and talent, but when he was 20, he faced the darkness of schizophrenia, a battle that ultimately claimed his life in 2015 at the age of 22. In his honor, Ben’s Memorial Mile is more than a run or walk—it is a movement to break the silence around mental illness, raise critical funds, and bring people together in joy and remembrance.
The event features two one-mile races that begin and end at Fishel Park and wind through the charming local neighborhood. The first race is for non-elite runners, walkers, families, kids, and strollers—everyone is encouraged to participate. The second race welcomes elite runners. All participants who cross the finish line will receive a chip-timed result.
After the races, the celebration continues with a live music festival in the park, showcasing local talent and Ben’s own love of music and poetry. Booths supporting mental health organizations will provide resources and information, turning the park into a hub of connection and care. There will also be food, raffles, fitness booths, and kids activities.
“All the proceeds from Ben’s Memorial Mile go toward supporting mental health initiatives,” said Jamie Lee Silver, Ben’s mother and co-event organizer. “This is our way of honoring Ben’s incredible spirit and making a real difference in the lives of others.”
