Next generation of Physician Assistants, Clinical Psychologists, ready to care for the community

Midwestern University proudly celebrated the graduation of 124 master’s and doctoral degree recipients from the College of Health Sciences on August 28, 2025, on its Downers Grove Campus. The ceremony marked the beginning of professional healthcare careers for graduates entering two of the nation’s most in-demand fields: Physician Assistant Studies and Clinical Psychology.

The ceremony also featured a special tribute to Captain Tana Nixon, U.S. Army, a graduate of the Doctor of Clinical Psychology program. Midwestern University honors graduates who are currently serving or entering military service for their dedication to both their country and the healthcare profession.

During the ceremony, graduates received inspirational messages from their Dean, University leaders, and Ellyssa Dougan, Class President, and Doctor of Clinical Psychology (Psy.D.) Program graduate.

“When I think about Midwestern, I think about community, not just classmates, but professors, staff, and loved ones who supported us every step of the way,” said Dr. Dougan. “Even during the toughest moments, such as having to wear masks during our first year, 7 a.m. exams, and first clinical rotations, we still found time to laugh, to cry, and to celebrate.”

Fred Romano, Ph.D., Dean of the College of Health Sciences, Downers Grove, also shared closing reflections with the graduates. “You have worked with great discipline, intelligence, and resilience to complete your studies, and we are proud of all you have achieved. As you step into the next chapter of your professional journey, I encourage you to carry with you not only what you learned in the classroom or in clinical training, but also the values that have strengthened you along the way: integrity, empathy, collaboration, and curiosity. No matter where your paths lead, into research, practice, leadership, policy, or continued study, your work will matter. You will face complexity, challenge, and change, and yet you are ready. The foundation you have built at Midwestern University will serve you well.” After 35 years of dedicated service to the University, Dr. Romano has announced his retirement, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of helping to prepare students for impactful, patient-focused careers.

Physician Assistants (PAs) are critical members of healthcare teams, helping to meet the growing need for accessible, high-quality medical care across the country. Clinical Psychologists are likewise in high demand, especially as mental health continues to be recognized as a vital component of overall well-being. Graduates of these rigorous programs are well-prepared to serve in a variety of settings, from hospitals and clinics to community health centers and private practice.
